The Great Gig In The Sky

Description

I spent an hour driving around looking for a spot to shoot. About five miles inland, the sky looked fantastic, so I drove out to La Jolla (my usual spot for sunsets), but the shoreline was completely socked in, so I left and drove south a bit to Pacific Beach.

The sky looked...well, terrible. I decided to set up my gear and get all my metering done and stick around for another half hour or so, but the sky wasn't really cooperating. But before I could turn tail and run home, the sun seemed to burn through the marine layer, and the fog cleared for about 4 minutes, which was long enough for me to snap 3 shots, this being one of them.

Patience is definitely a virtue. Some photographers stay for the best light, even if it may not happen. I am glad I waited.

In my opinion, I feel this is my best work yet. I'd love to hear your input.

Oh, my gear!

I used a Hoya ND8 filter, and a Cokin ND8 Soft grad to tame the exposure in the sky.

if only i could create the things you take pictures of. Then i would have to wear sandals carry a staff and be able to part the seas, and remember about the great flood so i can get my boat ready.

I guess god can only create things like this so i'll just admire them for now, and hope i can draw a copy of the real thing when i get talented enough to do so
